Available both in their iconic aviator and the new P3 Shadow frame styles. Studies have shown blue lenses to have a calming effect on the wearer, the grey blue tint enhances contours around objects and reduces glare. This ease in viewing experience seems to invoke less stress on the eye for longer time wear.

Additionally a hydrophobic coating was added to the blue glass lenses. Hydrophobic simply defined means “afraid of water.” The specially designed coating facilitates the run-off of water droplets from the lens surface whether from sweat or from an aqueous environment or in the rain. The coating also lends itself to the aid of cleaning your glasses making it quicker and easier to remove smudges. Also worth noting, the lenses have a back-side anti reflective coating to eliminate distracting bounce back glare.

Michael Bastian once again teams up with Randolph Engineering for a special collection of sunglasses.

American Eyewear brand Randolph Engineering, who has been making classic shades for over four decades, gets a fashion boost from American menswear designer Michael Bastian.

Michael Bastian, known for his clean American-prep styling, puts a twist on several pieces from the Randolph archives, as well as helps create a few completely new designs.  From frames with clip-on lenses inspired by James Dean to a squared off masculine 70’s inspired design, there is no shortage of inventiveness in the collection which features both metal and acetate sunglasses and eyeglasses.

The Collection:

The JD is inspired by the frames worn by American actor and icon James Dean.

The JD model is a classic P3 design which works as well today as it did way back then.  It is a unisex smaller fitting frame which provides a refined look on both men and women alike.  It is handmade in Italy using Mazzucchelli acetate and offered in three color combinations: tortoise, black, and clear.

Wear it as a sunglass or an eyeglass — The JD features a detachable metal sunglass clip which can easily be taken on/off.   So you can fit them with a prescription and wear them as an eyeglass, then quickly clip on the tinted lenses when you step into the sun. Or even if you only plan to only wear them as sunglasses, the JD is undoubtedly a cool piece.

Founded in 1972 by two engineers Jan Waszkiewicz and Stanley Zalesk, Randolph Engineering began by producing optical machinery and tools of the trade for then numerous American eyewear manufactures. From there they evolved into making their own military spec aviator sunglasses, which they provided for the US Air Force as a subcontractor.

Through tireless effort and excellence they were honored as the prime contractor for the US Military and allied Air Forces around the world in 1982, which still continues to this very day.

Randolph Engineering takes great pride in its deep rooted American and military heritage.  The brand  is still owned and operated by three generations of the Waszkiewicz and Zaleski families along with a highly skilled and dedicated American workforce. Where other still in business brands have since left or outsourced manufacturing overseas to cut costs, Randolph remains, making frames as they have always done.  Tried and true manufacturing methods are maintained using the machinery and tooling created by the founders.

They “twist test” one in every 50 frames to verify the soundness of the solder joints (where 90% of metal frames break).
